Parmalyn Sadjirul, a mother of six, a wife, and a farmer helps her husband in supporting their family. As a child, she grew up with 12 siblings, so it was hard for her parents to send them to school. Because of her family’s financial condition, she and her siblings did not have the opportunity to pursue a higher education. Motivated by her family’s struggles, she made sure that she will provide a better life for her own children for as long as she can. But what else can you do when access to education is barred by saltwater crocodiles?

Being someone who has experienced the dangers of the sea, naturally as a mother, she was worried for her children’s safety and future. That’s why she had a great deal of excitement when the “Bangka ng Karunungan’’ (Boat of Wisdom) Project was implemented in the communities of Bas-Bas Likud in the province of Tawi-Tawi.

With support from the Australian Government, the 12-month project ensures safe and free transportation across seawaters where saltwater crocodiles dwell. Implemented by Pathways and Tau-SPARTAN, Inc. the project safely transports 150 children of Bas-Bas Likud to schools.

“The ambitions I have for my children go far beyond the scope of this program,” Parmalyn gladly shared. “My most important goal is that they excel academically, embrace the value of hard work, and strive for greatness in whatever they choose to do. It does not matter whether their dreams lead them to become teachers, doctors, police officers, or nurses. I will support their aspirations wholeheartedly, regardless of our current financial situation.”

Not only has the project provided a significant change on the lives of the children, it has also created a tremendous impact on the entire community as well. It has opened up a whole new world to them, allowing all ages to dream big and aspire for greatness. The significance of this gift cannot be overstated, as it gives hope and inspiration to the community as well as a sense of empowerment within the community.

“You are truly commendable for your dedication to empowering the young generation. And together, we will create a brighter future filled with endless opportunities and achievements, and I hope that my story will serve as a testament for parents to encourage their children to pursue formal education,” Parmalyn said with gratitude to Australia.

A Ray of Hope

Lina has dedicated her life to teaching the children in her remote community in Bas-Bas since access to education was a daily struggle for many students. “Only families with private boats were able to make it to classes. Those without such means of transportation were forced to miss their classes,” she recalled. With irregular attendance, it was difficult for Lina to keep her students on track and inspire a love for learning.

When the Bangka ng Karunungan began, Lina witnessed the remarkable impact firsthand. “The students are punctual and eager to learn, as they no longer face the daunting task of navigating long journeys on foot,” she said. With stable attendance, Lina can now focus fully on teaching and nurturing curious young minds.

For Lina and her students, the Bangka ng Karunungan represents more than just a mode of transport. It is a symbol of hope — leading them safely to the open doors of education that were once far-fetched. “I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Australia for the unwavering support and assistance you have extended to us, even though we are physically distant,” Lina expressed gratefully.

“Your support has not only impacted the lives of our students but has also inspired our entire community. It serves as a testament to the notion that distance should not hinder the provision of quality education and the pursuit of knowledge.

“Together, let us uphold the promise of #NoBangsamoroChildLeftbehind, ensuring that every child in our care receives the education they deserve and the opportunity to thrive.”
